Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Physical Therapist?
Physical Therapists are graduates of accredited Physical Therapy programs that are BSPT (Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy), MSPT (Master of Science in Physical Therapy) or DPT (doctor of Physical Therapy). They perform evaluations, formulate the plan of care for patients referred to Physical Therapy, initiate and carry out their treatments. When starting your therapy it is crucial to know if you are going to a registered facility and there are licensed personnel in the facility.
Do I need a prescription from a Physician?
No. In New York, you do not require a prescription for a physical therapist to administer physical therapy. You can utilize “Direct Access” which allows 10 treatments or 30 days, whichever comes first to initiate therapy. If therapy is needed beyond this, then a prescription would be required. (Note: some insurance plans require a prescription for coverage, see direct access for more on this.)
Am I a candidate for Physical Therapy?
The following is a list of common reasons to come for physical therapy: pain, tightness, spasms, weakness, balance problems, difficulty walking, after joint surgeries, recovering from a serious injury, sprains and strains, neck and back pain, sports and accident related injuries, neurological disorders such as; stroke, Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis, joint problems (shoulder, elbow, hand, hip, knee, ankle, foot), Musculo-Skeletal disorders in children, peripheral neuropathy and nerve damage. If you have a condition and are unsure whether physical therapy can help, please do not hesitate to contact us at 585-742-8270.
How do I start my Physical Therapy?
You may contact us by phone, fax or email. We will verify insurance coverage, eligibility, co-pays, and deductibles after scheduling your initial visit/evaluation with the therapist. Fill out the contact us form on the website and someone from our pateint care team will reach out to you.
What if I can’t afford my co-pays/deductible?
Co-pays and deductibles are due at time of service. We understand the rising cost of healthcare including physical therapy interventions. To assist you, payment arrangements can be made with the billing manager.
How can I maximize my visits?
At our facility, active participation is a must. Although we incorporate feel good modalities such as heat, we only use them as an adjunct to our treatments; therapeutic exercises and activities are performed by you, the patient. Each exercise should be carried out in a proper manner. You will be given home exercises that are to be performed especially on non-therapy days. Your progress largely depends on your compliance and attendance.
What do I need to wear?
You will need to wear comfortable clothes, like you would wear for light exercise outside or at the gym. If you forget, we have shorts and treatment gowns available at all times.

Will my insurance cover my therapy?

If you prefer, you can call us today and our staff will be glad to assist you in determining your benefits. If a co-payment is due, you will be required to pay that at the time of your service.
How often will I come to therapy? How long does each session last?
Each therapy session can last up to one hour; however the frequency and duration of the appointments varies for each patient. This will be determined after your initial evaluation.
Do you follow HIPAA guidelines?
We absolutely follow all Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) guidelines for our patients to protect their health and privacy. Please find more information about our HIPAA guidelines on our New Patient Forms section of the website.
Who decides when I get discharged from therapy?
Discharge will depend on your physician and the status of your progress. Your progress is monitored by the physical therapist as shown by objective measurements and your subjective perception of your function. Discharge is deemed necessary when: 1️⃣ you have reached your maximum functional potential; 2️⃣ your condition is not progressing anymore; 3️⃣ treatment interventions are not helping your condition; 4️⃣ You have reached your short-term and long-term physical therapy goals.
